Massachusetts Peace Action Endorses Mike Capuano for Re-Election

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Tuesday, August 14, 2018 – Massachusetts Peace Action, an affiliate of Peace Action, the nation’s largest grassroots peace and disarmament membership organization, today endorsed Rep. Michael E. Capuano for re-election, citing his work to advance peace throughout the world, and implement a just U.S. foreign policy.

“Massachusetts Peace Action has a strong friend and advocate in Mike Capuano,” said Cole Harrison, Executive Director of Massachusetts Peace Action. “Mike has always fought for peace: he has been a consistent voice to check U.S. wars and military spending during 20 years in Congress, and our world is a safer place today because of his advocacy. We are proud to endorse Mike for re-election as we work together for a more peaceful world.”

Rep. Capuano has been a lifelong advocate and a consistent voice to check U.S. wars and military spending. A member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, he consistently votes for the People’s Budget, against excessive military appropriations, against increases in U.S. nuclear weapons, and to withdraw U.S. forces from Afghanistan. He voted against the Iraq War and he introduced a bill to forbid U.S. military action in Syria, and sued President Obama to challenge his illegal intervention in Libya, because only Congress can authorize the use of military force.

“Today, we face a dangerous world — and with Donald Trump in the White House, our peace and security is threatened every day,” said Rep. Capuano. “I have always fought on the side of peace and justice. From opposing troops in Syria, to suing President Obama over his actions in Libya, I will continue to work every day to make our world safer, more peaceful place.”

Massachusetts Peace Action is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to develop the sustained political power to foster a more just and peaceful U.S. foreign policy. Through grassroots organizing, policy advocacy, and community education, the group promotes human rights and global cooperation, seeks an end to war and the spread of nuclear weapons, and supports budget priorities that redirect excessive military spending to meeting human and environmental needs in communities.

Massachusetts Peace Action is an affiliate of Peace Action, the nation’s largest grassroots peace and disarmament membership organization, with more than 100,000 members and 30 chapters across the country.

Peace Action members used interviews, questionnaires, candidate forums, and voting records to assess who can best turn the United States towards a more peaceful foreign policy. Key issues confronting peace candidates in Congress include nuclear disarmament, end U.S. wars and interventions in the Middle East, end war threats against Korea, Iran, and Russia, and cut military spending to provide funds for health care, education, transportation, housing, jobs, and a green energy transition.

Rep. Capuano has also been endorsed by civil rights hero Rep. John Lewis, Rep. Maxine Waters, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, Governor Deval Patrick, the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, the Massachusetts Nurses Association, the American Federation of Teachers of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the Bay State Stonewall Democrats, the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC, the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus BOLD PAC.
