Massachusetts’ Leading Fire Fighters Union Endorses U.S. Rep. Mike Capuano for Re-election

Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts urge voters in 7th Congressional District to support leading advocate for working families

(Somerville, MA) – Massachusetts largest labor organization representing firefighting professionals in Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District, the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (PFFM), has endorsed U.S. Representative Michael E. Capuano for re-election.

The PFFM cited Capuano’s longstanding support for firefighters on key legislative priorities, including the federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program, support for legislation that would allow use of federal grant money and funds to hire laid-off firefighters (SAFER Act), and advocacy for working families, in supporting his campaign for re-election. “Our membership wholeheartedly endorses the re-election of Michael Capuano to Congress,” said Richard MacKinnon, Jr., president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts. “The Congressman has been a passionate leader on issues that matter to working families and has shown steadfast commitment to the needs of local fire departments across the Commonwealth.”

“Michael Capuano gives firefighters and working families a real voice in Washington every single day,” said John “Jay” Colbert, District 3 Vice President of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) representing Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. “Congressman Capuano doesn’t pay lip service to public safety issues, he gets results that make a difference.”

“I am grateful to receive endorsements from the brave men and women who put their lives on the lines every day to protect all of us from harm,” said Congressman Capuano. “The firefighting community makes families safer by dedicating their lives to public service. My promise to them, and all of my constituents, is that I will work every day to fight for the issues that matter the most, including protecting Social Security and Medicare benefits, reducing the costs of health care and medicine, and opposing destructive policies that undermine public service.”

The PFFM represents over 12,000 dedicated public employees in the Commonwealth.

Rep. Capuano has been endorsed for re-election by an array of labor organizations, progressive champions, and leading elected officials such as civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis, who called Capuano “a leader alongside those of us opposing the unfair and immoral policies of the Trump Administration” who shows “courage on so many issues,” including income inequality, civil rights, gun control, health care, affordable housing, gender pay inequity, immigration and transportation.
