CBCPAC endorses U.S. Rep. Mike Capuano; cites history of protecting, promoting civil rights; standing up to Donald Trump
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Friday, May 18, 2018 — The Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee (CBCPAC) today endorsed U.S. Rep. Michael E. Capuano for re-election. In its endorsement, the CBCPAC highlighted Rep. Capuano’s commitment to creating opportunities for communities of color in his district and across the U.S., and his progressive record of fighting for civil rights, affordable housing, health care, transportation equity and gender pay equity; as well as his commitment to fighting back against the bigoted policies of the Trump Administration.
“At a time when Donald Trump continues to spew hateful rhetoric and policies, we need a leader like Rep. Capuano in Congress,” said Rep. Gregory Meeks, chairman of the CBCPAC. “Civil rights are under attack, and we need to fight back. Rep. Capuano has built his career on standing up for those who have been left behind, from health care, to transportation, to housing. We in the Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee have a strong, committed partner in Mike and unanimously support his campaign for Congress.”
“Mike has fought side by side with me in Congress to address inequality and create greater economic opportunities for communities of color,” said Rep. Robin Kelly, a member of the CBCPAC. “He is also a strong advocate for the commonsense gun reform we desperately need in our country. Simply put, Mike is a champion for all, and I’m proud to support him as we continue our work forward.”
“The Congressional Black Caucus PAC is one of the most powerful voices in the ongoing battle for civil rights for all Americans, and I’m proud to receive their support,” said Rep. Capuano. “I know that inequality exists at every turn, and we cannot afford to have civil rights rolled back under the Trump Administration. Whether it’s securing new apartments for Whittier Street residents in Roxbury, or funding community health centers, or investigating inequality in the Fairmount Line, I won’t back down from taking on big problems, and creating solutions. I thank the CBCPAC for their support, and will continue working every day to level the playing field for everyone.”
Rep. Capuano’s record consistently shows his dedication to identifying and challenging inequalities present in Massachusetts, and across the country. Nationally, Rep. Capuano has co-sponsored the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Reauthorization Act, maintaining the provisions of the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 2016, he asked the Department of Justice to investigate potential civil rights violations on the Fairmount Line, to determine whether the Keolis Commuter Services were diverting trains from neighborhoods of color in Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury and instead using the trains to serve other, more affluent communities in the suburbs. In 2017, he donated $53,000 of his own campaign funds to make the line free for two weeks to encourage ridership.
Creating opportunities for everyone cuts across all industries: some of Rep. Capuano’s largest achievements to level the playing field for everyone include securing a $30 million grant to completely rebuild the Whittier Street housing development in Roxbury, increasing the number of affordable units and giving every existing low-income tenant a new apartment; securing $20 million to rebuild Ruggles Station in Roxbury; and securing $350 million to ready Boston Harbor for a bigger share of the shipping industry, with more good-paying jobs that can support families.
Rep. Capuano has also fought to improve health care for communities of color. He co-founded the House Caucus on Community Health Centers, and over the last decade, enrollment in community health centers has more than doubled. Rep. Capuano is a champion of the Boston Public Health Commission’s REACH initiative, which uses federal funds to mobilize community health education and empowerment and increase diagnostic screenings in underserved neighborhoods. He also successfully restored funding for the Boston Steps program, which provides resources for chronic disease management and prevention, particularly in areas where significant health disparities persist. These achievements are in conjunction with the Congressman’s work to secure more medical research funding for Boston than any other city in the country, helping Boston’s hospitals and health centers continue to provide good jobs.
Rep. Capuano has been endorsed for re-election by an array of labor organizations, progressive champions, and leading elected officials such as Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, U.S. Congressman John Lewis, the Massachusetts Nurses Association, the National Education Association and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. He has also earned a perfect 100 percent score from the NAACP, the ACLU and the Human Rights Campaign.
