Pearl Harbor Day
Today, on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, as the son of a wounded World War II veteran, I extend my eternal gratitude to all those who responded in their country’s time of need.
68 years later, America’s enemies are more dispersed, more asymmetrical and more comfortable fighting in the shadows. And our response to those threats must reflect the reality of the threat today, a threat much different than what my father faced in World War II.
But what hasn’t changed since World War II is the need for all of us to be united in our support of the men and women who serve this country. Supporting our active duty servicemembers, veterans and military families is never about politics. It is about doing what is right, about doing what we can do to show our gratitude for their sacrifice and service.
We must do all we can to help those who serve, whether by advocating to make sure those in the field have the best possible equipment or technology, or by ensuring comprehensive care for our wounded veterans. We must work to make sure that military families aren’t exposed to foreclosures or business closures while someone is deployed overseas. Our returning veterans deserve all the counseling, support and services they need. Military families in particular deserve our attention, because of the sacrifices that they make while their loved ones are serving.
Today we remember those we lost at Pearl Harbor and throughout the course of the War, and renew our commitment to support today's servicemembers, veterans and our military families.
